Pain Management

Anaesthetists aim to control the pain after surgery by the use of various medicine and other techniques commenced before, during or after the surgery.

Pain after surgery is called acute pain and some discomfort is expected after operations.

The management of pain has changed over recent years and now includes the use of multimodal analgesia which means using low doses of several medications to produce the best pain relief with minimal side effects. In a collaborative plan with you, your anaesthetist and your surgeon (and sometimes other team members such as your nurses and physiotherapists) we aim to have you feeling good and eating, drinking and mobilising as soon as possible after your operation.

Some of the pain relieving medicines may be given as a local or regional nerve block. See information on nerve blocks HERE.

Anaesthetists are very experienced with which of these medicines are best in certain situations.
